Self-Care Tip: Finding Control in Chaos
/Currently, we are surrounded by chaos and turbulence that has been created by this global pandemic. Flooded daily with new information, we must constantly shift focus and direction. Some of us also have to juggle not only demands at work but the added responsibilities of shifting priorities at home.
Times like this make it feel like nothing is ever truly finished or accomplished, and we wake up in the morning already behind on our work. Every day can feel like a juggling act.
There is a way, however, to find some sense of control.
Think of a simple chore that you might do in your normal day-to-day routine. With the weekend coming up, you probably have a list of things already waiting. It could be doing a load of laundry, washing dishes, making your bed, tidying up your workspace, or walking the dog. Now do that same chore or task mindfully. Focus your full attention on the task and completely immerse yourself in the experience. Take your time and savor each moment. Enjoy the feel of warm soapy dishwater, the smell of your laundry detergent, the warmth of towels just out of the dryer, or the cool breeze as you walk the dog. Avoid letting your mind wander and, to help focus, literally repeat silently to yourself, “I am enjoying the fragrance of Gain detergent,” or whatever it is that you are experiencing.
When you’re done, stop and acknowledge that you have completed the task. Make a mental "check-mark" on your to-do list and congratulate yourself on doing that task better than ever!
And carefully take note: “I finished that!”
